Debut Novel Tough Luck Out Now!

It is with an off-putting amount of pride that we present Tough Luck, our first ever fantasy novel. Heck, it’s the first thing we’ve ever put together in a supposedly professional sense.

Tough Luck is just over 90,000 words long(around 400 normal book pages), and the first draft took about ten months of tandem writing. A couple of edits later, we decided to self-publish the book for the dozens of people that might enjoy it as is. We’re still seeking representation, but we’re thrilled with all of the feedback we’ve received from readers.

Tough Luck is about a seventeen-year-old boy named March. He barely attends high school, doesn’t interact with people his own age, and is stuck in the routine of working for his crime boss uncle and gambling away all of his earnings on slots. The prospect of a jackpot is basically all that motivates him, and he believes his one-in-a-million chance is guaranteed by the millionth attempt. His rut is diverted when a mysterious old man wins the jackpot on March’s favorite slot machine, theoretically setting things back to square one.

Only, the old man doesn’t simply disappear. After a chance repeat encounter, March is let in on the secret of what real luck is. The old man is a Warlock, a member of a secret world that ritually infuses its subjects with the essence of long-dead monsters. It is through one such ritual that March is granted the Leprechaun’s luck, and a lot more than he bargained for.

Acting as the current Leprechaun, and a powerful new addition to Warlock society, March is whisked away to Rasselbock Academy. There, he’ll need to prove himself to the magical world at large while attending classes with other monster-infused youths. Zombies, Selkies, Dragons, and even a Rat King number among March’s contemporaries. Powerful forces from outside the school conspire to take his life-changing power away from him. When March’s past and present collide, it’ll take all the luck in the world to get out alive.

If that sounds like your kind of book, please give it a shot. A more spoiler-filled version of the synopsis is available on the Books page, as is a link to our Amazon page.

We were inspired by modern classics like the Harry Potter series, Percy Jackson books, X-Men, and My Hero Academia. Our sense of humor meets somewhere between Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and The Venture Bros, and is present in the vivid descriptions and snappy dialogue found throughout the novel.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who put up with us talking about this project throughout its development, and everyone who’s read Tough Luck. Its unnamed sequel is well underway, with many more stories to come.
